Steamers has been dishing up the highest quality of steamed, grilled, and fresh fried seafood on the Outer Banks since 1994.

How it all started

In 1994, Steamers co-founder Linda Coats Welch not only came up with the original Outer Banks New England-style clambake, but also the restaurant recipe for success: combine the high quality food of a big city restaurant with the casual atmosphere and fresh seafood of the beach, and vacation-going families and their friends will keep coming back. First located in Corolla, NC, Steamers has stood as a beacon for fresh & gourmet seafood on the Outer Banks since the beginning.

How we have evolved...

With the launch of Steamers Catering in 2006, Steamers was able to provide upscale and delicious catering to the Outer Banks with our fresh and gourmet approach to cooking. Steamers catering is perfect for gathering parties, family reunions, birthday parties, weddings, rehearsal dinners, and corporate events.

Striving to meet the varied needs and tastes of the Outer Banks, we were privileged to return to our original roots with the opening of our full-service restaurant in Southern Shores in 2016. Fast forward to 2024… We are thrilled to be entering this season with two mobile kitchens that will allow us to participate in more local, community events and expand our catering capabilities. We would love to be invited to your next party!

Linda’s love for the hospitality industry began with a summer job in the Black Forest in Germany.  She parlayed a weeklong vacation into an opportunity to work for two ladies who had opened a small pension-café after retiring from the U.N. and welcomed her into the business as if she were family.  Summer jobs in college and second jobs as a young professional ranged from a .99 cent breakfast place in Kitty Hawk to a 4-star restaurant in Roslyn, Virginia, and everything in between.  Each establishment had its own unique mix of clientele and cuisine, but one thing became apparent to her; restaurants are places where people gather up with those they love to celebrate special moments. The honor of being invited into that moment has become her life’s passion.

Chris was mentored and trained by none other than JK Norfleet, an Outer Banks legend in his own right.  JK was a real maverick in the industry in the 1980’s and was the owner and operator of the original JK’s.  Chris took his philosophy as his own; serve only a high-quality product in a straightforward fashion with an upscale twist and stand behind it.  A match was lit for Chirs that fired a gift and a passion for cooking that has allowed him to expand the restaurant into one of the most well-respected catering companies on the Outer Banks.  Because Chris’ hospitality experience began as a high-end server in establishments like the Harbor Club in Norfolk and Pete’s Restaurant in Boca Raton, he has been able to marshal a level of service and cuisine that never fails to please.




Enjoy your meal outside at one of our Covered Outside tables or sit inside in our Spacious, Two Level Dining Rooms. We operate on a first come, first serve basis April-October.
